Major BC Medical Scare rocks Health Authorities

Posted by admin on February 12th, 2011 and filed under health | No Comments »

VICTORIA – When you go to the hospital you trust the people who are treating and testing you know how to do their job.

But that trust has been broken in BC as patients learn about a major medical scare.

3,400 people in Powell River and the Fraser Valley have been warned that their medical tests could be wrong.

The radiologists who reviewed their CT and ultrasound scans were not qualified.

The cases involve everything from blood clots to cancer.

As I was checking out of the market the other day, the check out person asked me what COQ-10 was, because she noticed it has been a hot seller recently. I’ve noticed in my practice that many cardiovascular patients are taking this as a natural supplement.
Coenzyme Q-10 is a natural compound found in the energy producing center of our cells AND is a key ingredient involved in the production of cellular energy. Cellular energy, otherwise known as ATP, Adenosine Triphosphate is what sparks a muscle contraction or makes our hearts pump. It also sparks all biological processes which help our cells grow, divide and communicate. It is a highly charged energy molecule that our bodies depend on. Recent studies have been done on COQ-10s specific role in cardiovascular health. Studies have found that COQ-10 is an antioxidant which can remove toxic and damaging substances (otherwise known as free radials) from our bodies that lead to a number of health problems categorized as heart disease including heart failure, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Studies have also shown that COQ-10 supplements the energy of the weakened heart muscle helping to increase the force of its pumping action. Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, you should consult your health care provider before taking any new dietary supplements. Consult yours to see if COQ-10 may be good for you!

Patient ED @ 617-379-1582 INFO
On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown.
You may receive a sedative by mouth and
an intravenous line may be put in.
You will then be transferred to the operating table.
To perform a D and C, your doctor needs unobstructed access to your uterus, so your feet will be raised, separated and placed in canvas slings – holding your legs in a position much like that position used during a routine gynecological exam.
To begin, the genital area is swabbed with an antiseptic solution …
… and sterile towels are draped around until only the vulva is exposed.
Then the surgeon will use a gloved hand to conduct a vaginal examination and will check the size and location of the uterus by pressing on your lower abdomen.
A metal or plastic vaginal speculum is used to gently expand the vagina and allow access to the cervix. Patient Education
Once the cervix is visible, a forcep is used to grasp the front lip of the cervix – causing the uterus to open a little.
Using a blunt-tipped probe, the surgeon carefully measures the length of the uterus and takes a small sample of tissue from the cervical canal.
Next, the surgeon will dilate, or open the cervix, using a series of progressively larger metal rods called dilators.
When the cervix has expanded sufficiently, the doctor will use a spoon-shaped instrument called a curette to gently scrape out the lining of the uterus. In some cases, surge
When the entire lining of the uterus has been removed, the instruments are withdrawn.
The tissue removed will then be sent to a laboratory for analysis.

SavantMD.com ~ Vegetable Vouchers Can Help Prevent Childhood Obesity ~ Nutrition & Wellness Tip

Posted by admin on October 22nd, 2010 and filed under nutrition and wellness | No Comments »

A patient of mine gave me a great topic for a tip when he sent me this article about doctors in Massachusetts giving their patients “vegetable prescriptions” to help fight childhood obesity. These prescriptions are really vouchers that families can use to buy vegetables at their local farmers’ market. Now, the best way for many Americans to avoid obesity is to stay away from processed foods like salty and sugary snacks and vegetable vouchers alone may not be enough, but I think it really gets the ball rolling where people become more aware of fresh fruits and vegetables and will be more likely to incorporate them into their diets on a regular basis. So, wherever you live, find your local farmers’ market and eat your vegetables.
